Course Aim
This course has been designed to introduce the student to the art of Talam/Nattuvangam. Talam is the beat/tempo on which every dance offering is built and is the bedrock of movement. Through this course the student will be able to build a clear understanding of the different Talam structures or rhythmic formations that are used in most classical dance disciplines in India. But the applicability of the tools that the student acquires through this across can be implemented beyond Indian dance forms too. By the end of the course the student will be able to create their own rhythmic sequences that we call by the name, ‘Jathis’ that draw from Mridangam (Double-sided drum used in Carnatic music) mnemonic syllables. Apart from creating these rhythmic patterns the student will also be trained in rendering these Jathis with confidence and the right amount of voice inflections and modulations needed for an effective performance. Finally the students of dance will be taught to make astute creative choices that bring out the nuance of each rhythmic pattern that has been created or that they are presented with.
